Short Stories on the Web - Forum based talent
I recently visited a site called Writing Forums and I have to tell you this is a really interesting place to read about new talent and see writers at their very core.
There are more than a couple writers forums out there and specifically two called Writing Forums so let me make sure I get the URL straight. http://www.writingforums.com
At this site they have everything from poets, to fan fiction and of course, my favorite: horror writers. Writing forums does a couple of really neat things that I haven't noticed with other forums and that is going out of their way to cultivating talent. On some forums this doesn't happen and often ego's get in the way, but not on writing forums. They go out of the way to encourage even the the newest writer.
What I mean by this is that they have monthly contests and challenges. Often they will introduce a theme and members will then rise to the challenge. In one particular challenge the section is called Literary Maneuvers where a prompt is given and writers have to com pose a story in 650 words or less. There can be only one outright winner, but that isn't to say that there aren't other gems in the pile.
The challenge I came across was called: The Caretaker and the story that stuck out for me was not the winner of the challenge, but what a gruesome Apocalyptic short it was. Written by a member who goes by the nick name of Dick C it follows a fellow who may or may not be mentally ill bumbling between a gravestones and being ordered by the police to get off the streets. I can't post the story here, because I don't have the authors permission, but if you would like to check it visit the writing forums and sign up for a free membership.
You will find a link under Sub Forum Literary Maneuvers and the thread is called: The Caretaker.
You won't be disappointed.
That's the word..
